What we see in Oakey

Oakey's a town that still feels like the Darling Downs proper — wide streets, big blocks, and houses that were built to last but weren't exactly wired for how people live now. A lot of what you're pulling up to out here is sixties and seventies brick and weatherboard, and once you're inside the roof space or poking around in the meter box, you can really tell the age. The original wiring's often still doing its job, but it's working harder than it was ever meant to.

The agricultural side of things keeps it interesting too. You've got properties on the edge of town with sheds and grain setups that need serious power — it's not the same work as a suburban house in Rangeville or Newtown. The Army Aviation Centre draws a fair bit of defence housing to the area as well, and those places tend to be better maintained, but the older cottages closer to the main street are a different story.

The summers out here are brutal — hotter and drier than Toowoomba itself — so air conditioning load is something you factor in early. A lot of older homes weren't designed with that in mind.
