What we see in North Toowoomba

North Toowoomba's got a lot of character, and I mean that in both the good and the frustrating sense. Most of what I'm walking into out here is post-war brick and timber — solid houses built through the fifties, sixties, seventies, when nobody was thinking about the electrical demands we'd be putting on these places sixty years later. You pull up near Mort Estate or down the streets behind Toowoomba North State School and you're often looking at original wiring that's done remarkably well to last this long, but it's starting to show its age.

What catches homeowners off guard is usually what's underground or hidden in the walls. The stuff you can't see. A lot of these properties have old service cables running underground that were never really built to last forever, and they've had a good run, but they don't owe anyone anything at this point.

The newer infill townhouses sprinkled around the suburb are a different story — built to current standards, no drama. But the older homes, especially anything backing onto the quieter residential streets closer to North Point, that's where you want to go in with realistic expectations about what you might find once you start looking properly.
